Care for gems and other stones
Heat: Sudden temperature changes can crack or damage stones like opal or tanzanite.
Light: Some stones fade in direct sunlight—amethyst, kunzite, and topaz are examples.
Moisture: Pearls and opals need a little humidit
Porosity: Some stones, like turquoise and opal, are porous and can absorb liquids.
Sensitivity: Some gems (e.g., amethyst, citrine) fade under prolonged sunlight exposurey but shouldn't be soaked in water.
Basic cleaning tips
Use lukewarm water with a gentle soap and a soft brush (like a toothbrush). Rinse thoroughly.
Safe for diamonds, rubies, and sapphires—but not for porous or treated stones (like emeralds or opals).
No bleach, acetone, or ammonia on soft or treated stones.
Have jewellery cleaned and inspected by a jeweller at least once a year.
Gold
18K / 14K / 10K Gold: Mixed with other metals (like copper or silver) for strength. More durable, but can tarnish slightly over time due to alloys
Gold-Plated / Vermeil: A thin layer of gold over a base metal; more delicate and prone to wearing off.
White Gold: Often rhodium-plated, requiring occasional re-plating to maintain its bright finish.
Rose Gold: Contains copper, which can oxidize slightly but generally stays beautiful with minimal care.
Routine Home Cleaning (for solid gold):
Mix a few drops of mild dish soap in warm water.
Soak the gold jewellery for 15–30 minutes.
Gently brush with a soft toothbrush.
Rinse with clean lukewarm water.
Pat dry with a lint-free cloth.
Storage Tips
Store each gold piece separately in a soft pouch or lined box to prevent scratching.
Keep away from moisture and direct sunlight.
Avoid throwing gold jewellery into drawers or bags where it can get scratched by other metals or harder stones.

iIf gold is scratched or dented, a jeweller can often restore the surface.
